Valor Place opens in Albany. See the photos!
In central Albany, Valor Place provides 30 affordable homes designed for veterans and individuals with behavioral health needs — all households at or below 50% AMI.
Resident Gene Manley, an Air Force veteran, said that having permanent housing “lets you make decisions about your future again,” funder Oregon Housing and Community Services reported in a May post. Manley had been living in a travel trailer on a family member’s property for several years before moving into Valor Place. “It’s personal, comfortable, and permanent,” Manley said.
The HDC team worked with sponsor Linn-Benton Housing Authority (LBHA) to develop the project, which opened to residents early this year. The three-story building is located on formerly vacant land adjacent to another LBHA property, revitalizing underutilized space near essential services. Residents of the one-bedroom and studio units have access to a community room, floor lounges, a courtyard, and a community garden to foster connection and livability. A solar array with battery backup will allow the community room to transform into a resilience center during power outages. A funding partnership with Linn County Mental Health demonstrates the project’s deep commitment to integrated, community-centered care.
This project continues HDC’s relationship with LBHA, BDA Architecture, and Meili Construction that started with the development of LBHA’s Garden View Apartments in 2015-2020. We’re grateful to the whole team and all the Valor Place project partners for making this important housing community a reality!
